UGHELLI/Nigeria: In a significant address delivered at the presentation of Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Macaulay Popo Ovbagbedia, Uhurhie-Osadjere 11, the Owhorode of Olomu Kingdom, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, highlighted the indispensable role of traditional institutions in the socio-economic and cultural advancement of the state.
Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori underscored the immeasurable value of traditional institutions in African societies, describing them as irreplaceable cornerstones for grassroots unity.
“The traditional institution remains a priceless legacy in any African society for which there is yet no credible substitute, as a rallying point for the people at the grassroots,” Governor Oborevwori affirmed, pledging unwavering support for their continued prominence in the state’s development.
He expressed his administration’s commitment to holding traditional rulers in high esteem, assuring them of their vital role in the socio-economic fabric of the state. The governor also congratulated the Owhorode on his successful ascension to the throne and commended the people of Olomu for their cooperation and contributions to the momentous event.
Governor Oborevwori reflected on the importance of the day, recognizing it as a confirmation of various traditional rites and processes that mark the Owhorode’s ascension to the throne.
“I am happy with the peace and love that prevailed and attended all the processes, because they are the hallmarks of the confidence reposed in him by the people of Olomu, including their friends, well-wishers, and now, Delta State Government,” he added.
He urged traditional rulers to maintain transparency and uphold the principles of justice, fair play, and equity in all their dealings with their subjects. Furthermore, he implored them to prioritize the interests of the majority and the fear of God in every decision they make.
“Please, ensure that you encourage free flow of communication, dialogue, and consultation with all segments of your kingdom,” Governor Oborevwori emphasized, underscoring the pivotal role of traditional rulers as a reliable medium for government to connect with the people.
Governor Oborevwori called upon traditional rulers to give paramount attention to matters of security within their domains, addressing a critical concern for the well-being of their subjects.
Hon. Richard Kofi, Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, reiterated the commitment of the council to deliver democratic dividends to the people in his address.
Representing Olomu Kingdom, former President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for appointing Olomu sons and daughters to influential political positions, highlighting the appreciation of the community for such opportunities.
