ASABA/Nigeria: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has emphasized the crucial role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in combating criminal activities across Nigeria. He asserted that the effective deployment of ICT could foster peace and create a business-friendly environment, thereby boosting investor confidence in the country.
Governor Oborevwori made these remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the ICT Department at Force Headquarters, DIG Sokari Pedro, who also oversees the South-South geopolitical zone, at Government House in Asaba.
“The use of ICT has significantly enhanced the effectiveness, efficiency, and capacity of the Nigerian Police Force in managing investigations, intelligence gathering, and prosecution of suspects,” Oborevwori stated. He commended the Police Force for their commendable efforts in protecting lives and property and for their collaboration with the state government in maintaining peace in Delta State.
Reflecting on his administration’s achievements, the Governor said, “In my MORE Agenda, I promised Deltans enhanced peace and security. This is where I grew up, and I know the terrain very well. The peace we have enjoyed over the past year, despite incidents like Okuama, exceeds expectations.”
Governor Oborevwori also celebrated the recognition of security officers who have excelled in their duties. “I am glad that when awards were given in Nigeria, some individuals who have supported us through the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies received recognition. If we were not performing well, they would not have received those awards.”
He highlighted the transformation in areas plagued by long-standing violence, crediting specific officers for their exceptional work. “There is a particular place in Delta State where, for almost 20 years, civilians illegally bore rifles. Arresting them was a challenge. However, with the transfer of a dedicated officer, today, you can drive through that area without fear. He has recovered numerous arms and promptly investigates any gunshot incidents.”
Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the officer’s impact in Ekpan, saying, “Ekpan is very peaceful today, and I thank God that the IGP awarded him for his service.”
Acknowledging the complexities of managing a state with diverse ethnicities, the Governor credited the support from the state government for the Nigerian Police’s effectiveness in ensuring safety and security. He revealed plans to hand over newly procured vehicles to the police to enhance their operational efficiency, with a forthcoming invitation to the Inspector-General of Police for the commissioning ceremony.
Earlier, DIG Pedro described his visit to Government House, Asaba, as part of a familiarization tour of states in his zone. He called for collective efforts to combat criminal elements in the state.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the South-South geopolitical zone, DIG Pedro advocated for robust partnerships between state governments, the police, and other security agencies to sustain peace in the region. He praised Governor Oborevwori for his achievements within his first year in office and his support for the Delta State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, assuring the Governor of the police’s full cooperation in maintaining law and order in the state.
DIG Pedro also noted the positive impact of Governor Oborevwori’s human capital development initiatives on youth and the unemployed, which he described as a key factor in reducing youth restiveness and criminal activities. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of infrastructural development in the state.
