ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has launched the MORE Grant Scheme on Thursday, to target petty traders, artisans, and female entrepreneurs.
The initiative, benefiting 5,426 individuals from poor and vulnerable households, was unveiled at the Event Centre in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the scheme’s comprehensive support, stating it aims to empower 1,600 petty traders, 1,826 artisans, and 2,000 female entrepreneurs across the state. “Delta State is rich in talent and ambition,” he said, commending the beneficiaries for their contributions to the local economy. “Your hard work, creativity, and perseverance drive the vibrancy and resilience of our communities.”
The Governor highlighted the scheme as a beacon of hope, designed to provide essential resources to help scale businesses and improve livelihoods. He addressed the petty traders, acknowledging their daily struggles and commitment to their families and communities. “The MORE Grant Scheme will provide the financial assistance necessary to improve your businesses, transforming small ventures into flourishing enterprises,” he assured.
Oborevwori urged artisans to utilize their skills and craftsmanship to preserve the state’s cultural heritage while enhancing their livelihoods. “This grant will help you acquire better tools, access quality materials, and reach wider markets,” he added, emphasizing the importance of innovation in sustaining cultural traditions.
Addressing female entrepreneurs, the Governor praised their strength and resilience. “You have not stopped breaking barriers and setting new standards,” he remarked. “This grant scheme is dedicated to empowering you with the resources and mentorship needed to grow your businesses and inspire others.”
The Governor also announced plans for workshops, training sessions, and mentorship programs to equip beneficiaries with the necessary skills to thrive in a competitive market. “We aim to foster a community of empowered individuals who collaborate, innovate, and uplift one another,” he said.
Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl-Child Development, Orode Uduaghan, outlined the project’s three-phase approach, designed to empower specific segments of the state. She emphasized the impact of additional capital on petty traders, noting, “We are aware of how impactful even a small additional capital can be for these traders who work tirelessly to make a living.”
Keynote speakers Weyinmi Eribo and Nneka Okekearu lauded the Governor for his commitment to human capital development and pledged to partner with the state government to mentor young entrepreneurs. They affirmed that such initiatives are crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering economic growth.
Beneficiaries like Mr. Paul Onwochei, Ogemuno Endurance, and Shodipe Gbubemi Sarah expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for the financial support to expand their businesses, urging the continuation of the program to benefit more Deltans.
The event concluded with a symbolic presentation of cheques to select beneficiaries, marking a significant step towards economic empowerment and community development in
