ASABA/Nigeria: In a significant move aimed at addressing the shortage of teachers in primary schools across Delta State, Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has given the green light for the recruitment of primary school teachers, clerical officers, and watchmen in 22 local government council areas within the state. The announcement was made by Hon. Victor Ebonka, the State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), during a press briefing held after the State Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) Meeting in Asaba on Friday.
During the meeting, Ebonka clarified that the approval for recruitment was based on individual local government needs assessments, ensuring that each council can employ the necessary personnel to meet their specific requirements. He emphasized that the number of teachers hired would not be uniform across all councils, as consideration would also be given to those who had retired from their respective councils.
“The employment will not have a uniform number because each Local Government Council will be considering those that have retired from their Councils. So the number to employ will vary from Council to Council,” stated Ebonka.
In addition to addressing the teacher shortage, the recruitment drive will also encompass watchmen, clerical officers, and other support staff for the Local Government Education Authority, contributing to the improvement of primary education in the state.
Regarding financial matters, Ebonka debunked rumors suggesting an unusually high windfall for the local councils in July. He clarified that the allocation received for the month was higher than previous years but not out of the ordinary. The State Chairman also provided an update on the N40 billion facility for pension payments, expressing optimism about accessing the funds within the next month.
“About the N40 billion facility, all the necessary steps and processes have been completed and even the one percent management fee has been paid. We strongly believe that we will be able to access the money in the next one month,” assured Ebonka.
