Delta State Governor Pledges Continued Investment in Judiciary for Swift Justice Delivery

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized his commitment to bolstering the state’s judicial system during a special thanksgiving Mass marking the commencement of the 2023/2024 legal year at Emmanuel the Saviour Catholic Church in Asaba on Sunday. Governor Oborevwori expressed his concern over delays in Nigeria’s justice system and called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring the prompt dispensation of justice.

Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori remarked, “I say that because God Almighty proclaims that righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne,” highlighting the importance of justice in society. He praised the judiciary for starting the new legal year with a thanksgiving service and emphasized the shared responsibility of the Bar, Bench, and security agencies in upholding truth and justice.

The Governor acknowledged public apprehension regarding delays in the justice system, stressing that “justice delayed is justice denied.” He affirmed his government’s dedication to providing an enabling environment for the judiciary and mentioned recent investments in the sector, including sending 15 High Court Judges overseas for capacity building.

Governor Oborevwori extended his well-wishes to the judiciary for the 2023/2024 Legal Year, promising continued collaboration to enhance the knowledge and skills of judicial officers. He also provided assurance of the state’s commitment to completing the State High Court Complex promptly, ensuring a conducive working environment for the judiciary.

In his homily, Most Rev’d Michael Elue, Catholic Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese, highlighted the judiciary’s pivotal role in upholding the rule of law and urged those in power to lead by example. He called upon judges to maintain justice and appealed to Nigerians to support an independent and incorruptible judiciary.

The event was attended by prominent government figures, including the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, who joined Governor Oborevwori at the thanksgiving service.
