ASABA/Nigeria: In an affirmation of the commitment to bolstering security measures and fostering socio-economic growth, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday, reiterated the state government’s unwavering dedication to maintaining a robust partnership with the military and other security agencies.
Speaking during a meeting with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori underscored the pivotal role played by the Army in fortifying the security landscape of the nation.
The Governor, while approving the construction of internal roads at the 63 Brigade Headquarters, Asaba, emphasized the significance of the Army’s contribution to the overall security architecture of the country. He particularly lauded the Army’s restraint and professionalism in handling the Okuama 17 incident, expressing gratitude to the military high command for their swift withdrawal from the troubled community.
Governor Oborevwori conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the fallen officers, asserting, “It is not in our character to take somebody’s life, not to talk of security officers.” He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Army to ensure effective security measures, aligning with the state’s MORE Agenda aimed at enhancing peace and security.
Reflecting on the strategic positioning of military battalions within the state, Governor Oborevwori remarked, “We are lucky as a state to have three different battalions, 3, 90, and 181 battalions, and even a Brigade.” He stressed the pivotal role of security in fostering a conducive environment for investment, particularly in the oil-producing region where pipeline security is paramount.
Addressing land-related concerns, the Governor disclosed the readiness of the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the parcel of land allocated to the Amphibian Battalion of the Nigerian Army. He highlighted the state government’s efforts in facilitating the acquisition process, including cost waivers and expedited paperwork.
In response, Maj. Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori and the Registered Trustees of the Iweroko and Ameren (Ugogomeje) Family Trust of Koko for their support in providing land for the construction of Army barracks in Koko. Gen. Abdulsalam commended the Governor’s diplomatic acumen and cooperation in resolving security challenges, pledging the Army’s continued commitment to ensuring effective security in the state and the wider Niger Delta region.
The GOC also appealed for further support from the State Government in infrastructure development within Army barracks, soliciting assistance in the construction of internal roads and additional structures.
