UGHELLI/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a stern warning to contractors overseeing State Government projects to accelerate their pace of work amidst escalating construction expenses. The caution came during the Governor’s inspection of ongoing construction projects at various locations in Ughelli on Friday.
Governor Oborevwori, accompanied by the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, and his counterpart for Rural and Riverine Roads, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, expressed dissatisfaction with the sluggish progress of some contractors. He emphasized that delays could lead to increased costs and compromised project quality.
“I have come to ascertain the work that has been done so that we know how to channel our funds,” stated Governor Oborevwori during the inspection. “If they continue to slow down, when the rain comes, it will wash away the sharp sand on the road.”
Highlighting the significance of timely completion, Governor Oborevwori stressed, “Because of the nature of this area, these drains are very necessary to help evacuate water from the road, and without these drains, the road will not last.”
Addressing concerns about rising construction expenses, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that any upward review of contracts would be contingent upon the extent of work already completed. He urged contractors not to use potential reviews as an excuse for delays.
“When you delay, you are still going to do the work; so, why the delay?” queried Governor Oborevwori. “So, if we want to do an upward review, we will do it according to the extent of work done.”
The Governor also commended contractors for exemplary work on certain projects, including the Storm Drainage Project along Niger Cat Link road. However, he urged them to expedite efforts, particularly with the rainy season approaching.
With a series of projects inspected across different local government areas, Governor Oborevwori expressed optimism about the progress of key infrastructure initiatives, reiterating the government’s commitment to improving road networks across the state.
