Delta State Governor Urges NDLEA to Declare State of Emergency on Drug Abuse and Trafficking

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to take urgent action against the rising issue of substance abuse and illicit drugs trafficking in the country. The Governor emphasized the need for a state of emergency declaration to address the concerning trend effectively.

The Governor stated this during the courtesy visit of the Agency led by Alhaji Hamisu Lawal, the Assistant Commandant General (Narcotics) and Director of Administration and Establishment of NDLEA,

He pointed out the challenges posed by drug abuse in society, highlighting various factors contributing to the problem, including poor socio-economic backgrounds, family issues, bad parenting, academic struggles, and peer pressure, especially affecting young individuals in secondary and tertiary institutions, leading them towards unruly behavior.

The Governor also condemned a recent tragic incident involving the NDLEA that resulted in the death of a child in Okpanam area of the state.

The Governor, despite the unfortunate event, acknowledged the Agency’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and drug use. He urged the NDLEA to intensify its actions and assured the Agency of the State Government’s full support in eradicating substance abuse and ensuring a drug-free nation.

Alhaji Hamisu Lawal, in response, expressed gratitude for the State Government’s prompt intervention in the incident. He reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to tackle the menace of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the country.
