ASABA/Nigeria: In a recent courtesy visit, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State emphasized the need for the Nigerian Navy to take decisive action against illegal activities within the country’s maritime domain. The Governor expressed his appreciation for the Navy’s current efforts in securing Nigeria’s waterways, acknowledging the State’s reliance on the Navy’s continued support in protecting its coastal regions and vital oil production assets.
Governor Oborevwori stated, “We know how critical our terrain is, and that is why this visit is very important because Delta State is 40 percent coastal and we need all the support from the Navy.” He further encouraged the Navy to intensify its efforts, praising its role in facilitating smooth oil production within the region.
The Governor reminisced about his previous collaboration with Rear Admiral U.S.A Chugali, the Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, back in 2009, during which they effectively covered various riverine areas in the State. He expressed confidence in Admiral Chugali’s understanding of the local terrain and believed his presence would bolster security measures.
Governor Oborevwori highlighted the ongoing challenge of combating illegal activities within the maritime domain, but he expressed confidence that the Navy’s commitment and the vigilance of the Marine Police would eventually put an end to such activities.
In response to the visit, Rear Admiral Chugali thanked the Governor for the assistance provided to the Navy and other security agencies in Delta State. He assured that the existing cordial relationship between the Navy and the State would be maintained and reaffirmed the Navy’s dedication to ensuring a secure environment for social and economic activities to flourish.
The Governor concluded by reiterating his commitment to improving peace and security in Delta State through the implementation of the “M.O.R.E Agenda” and expressed confidence that, with the concerted efforts of the Navy and other security agencies, the State would remain peaceful, attracting further investments.
