Delta State Governor Urges Nigerian Universities to Prioritize Research and Innovation …Vows Continued Support for Education

ASABA/Nigeria: In a compelling address on Tuesday, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the pivotal role of research and innovation in addressing Nigeria’s challenges. Speaking during a courtesy visit from the Management of Federal University of Petroleum Resources, (FUPRE), Ugbomro, led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, Governor Oborevwori stressed the need for universities to intensify their efforts in viable research endeavors.

Governor Oborevwori lauded FUPRE for its ingenuity and underscored his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting education as a cornerstone of his MORE Agenda. He emphasized that universities must engage in more relevant research to tackle the nation’s unique problems, particularly those affecting their host states.

“As a university, you are doing very well, but one thing I must tell you today, is to encourage the university to continue to do more relevant research,” remarked Governor Oborevwori. “You find out that universities these days don’t do enough research. When you research, you will be able to do more things, just like you said that you people helped to clean up a polluted village. This was done because you are doing relevant research.”

Highlighting the significance of education, Governor Oborevwori affirmed, “The best legacy you can give to your children is education.” He pledged ongoing support for educational initiatives in Delta State, reaffirming his commitment to anything that would positively impact the state, including infrastructure development.

Responding to the university’s concerns, Governor Oborevwori assured prompt action, stating, “You have made some requests about the road leading to the main gate of the university. The Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine) would go and see how they can scope that road immediately.”

Earlier in the meeting, Professor Rim-Rukeh expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his electoral victory and the judiciary’s affirmation. He provided insights into FUPRE’s establishment in 2007 and its subsequent growth, highlighting the university’s contributions to environmental reclamation and sustainability, particularly in the oil pollution-affected community of Obi-Ayagha in Ughelli South Local Government Area.

Professor Rim-Rukeh reassured the Governor of FUPRE’s dedication to excellence in research and innovation for national development, as well as its commitment to equipping Niger Delta youths with employable skills.
