Delta State Governor Urges Traditional Rulers to Embrace Democracy in Leadership

WARRI/Nigeria:  In a bid to promote democratic values and peaceful coexistence within traditional communities, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on traditional rulers to adopt a democratic approach in handling issues within their kingdoms.

Governor Oborevwori made this plea during the ceremonial presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Ogheneochuko Morris Eyekpimi-Egbobonyen, Owhotemu II, Orosuen of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, emphasized the importance of aligning traditional leadership practices with the principles of democracy in the current national dispensation.

He stated, “Though traditional rulers are selected under a monarchical setting, the present democratic dispensation in our country should influence your approach to leadership. We are in a democratic setting, and communities should adopt a democratic approach in resolving all intra-community contradictions, including inter-community differences; this has been applicable in the state and it explains the peaceful atmosphere that pervades the State.”

Governor Oborevwori commended the people of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom for their peaceful transition and harmony in selecting the Orosuen. He urged communities across the state to emulate the smooth transition process that had resulted in festivities in the area.

He said, “On behalf of myself, the government, and people of Delta State, I congratulate His Royal Majesty, Ogheneochuko Morris Eyekpimi-Egbonyen, Owhotemu II, Orosuen of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom. I also felicitate with the people and everyone in Okere-Urhobo for the peace and harmony that attended the issue of picking the next Orosuen – a situation that brought everyone present to celebrate this festive occasion with the traditional ruler and his people.”

The governor urged other communities in the state to adopt a “give and take” approach for the peaceful resolution of all issues, mirroring the successful transition in Okere-Urhobo Kingdom. He emphasized the importance of community development and called on residents to reject the influence of criminal elements and mischief-makers, aiming to preserve Okere-Urhobo as a beacon of peace.

He reminded His Royal Majesty of his duty to be transparent, fair, and just in the discharge of his responsibilities, emphasizing his role as the father of all in the community.

In response, Chairman of Warri South Local Council, Hon. Michael Tidi, described the installation of the new Orosuen as a “mark of recognition and acceptance by his people” and expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for presenting the Staff of Office to the King.
