WARRI/Nigeria: In response to the recent tragic events in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators of the heinous crime. Governor Oborevwori emphasized that innocent citizens should not be made to suffer further.
The Governor stated this during a meeting with the Chairman and members of the Board of Enquiry set up by the Defence Headquarters to investigate the Okuama Killings, Governor Oborevwori expressed his administration’s deep concern over the crisis which resulted in the killing of army officers and soldiers.
He recounted the state’s efforts in managing the situation and assured the Board of the government’s full cooperation in its investigation.
The Governor highlighted the state’s commitment to peace and security, citing the successful celebration of Christmas without any incidents as evidence of the security agencies’ commendable efforts. He also praised the Advisory and Peace Building Council as well as the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution bodies for their roles in maintaining peace in the state.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to peace, noting that a peace accord was signed by the Okuama/Okoloba people following a meeting on February 7th. Despite these efforts, the Governor expressed shock over the events that unfolded during the military’s peace mission to the area.
Chairman of the Board of Enquiry, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, emphasized that their mission was to gather facts and not to assign blame. He stressed the importance of healthy communication and civil-military relations to ensure that economic activities thrive in the affected communities once again.
Ajayi called on the Governor to assist the Board in its enquiry by ensuring that relevant stakeholders are invited to provide their accounts of the crisis.
The Governor pledged to provide all necessary information and support to the Board, including submitting a position paper outlining the state’s role in the matter.
The investigation and subsequent actions are crucial steps towards achieving justice for the victims and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
