Delta State Health Commission and Nigeria Medical Association Forge Partnership for Health Access Expansion

ASABA/Nigeria: In a strategic move towards bolstering healthcare accessibility, the Director General (DG) of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, Olorogun (Dr.) Isaac Akpoveta, has emphasized the Commission’s dedication to the M.O.R.E. Agenda of the Oborevwori Administration.

This commitment was underscored during a meeting with executives of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Asaba Zone, held in Dr. Akpoveta’s Asaba office.

Dr. Akpoveta reiterated the Commission’s mission to relieve Deltans from the financial strains of exorbitant medical bills. He expressed the present administration’s steadfast commitment to completing ongoing projects initiated by predecessors, aiming to enhance the well-being of Deltans and residents in the state. Urging active participation in the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, he encouraged NMA members to contribute by purchasing health insurance for indigent individuals within their communities.

Providing an update on the success of the initiative, Dr. Akpoveta reported the recent enrollment of approximately 380 individuals, attributing the achievement to support from individuals, unions, and associations.

The DG reaffirmed the Commission’s promise to double the number of enrollees before the end of the administration’s first tenure, with a vision to uphold Delta State’s leading position in national health insurance scheme management.

Dr. Christopher Otene, Chairman of NMA, Asaba Zone, commended the collaboration between the association and the state government in addressing public health concerns. He highlighted the NMA’s role in public health awareness campaigns and the fight against medical quackery. Dr. Otene praised Dr. Akpoveta’s strategic leadership, drawing attention to his pivotal role as the pioneer Chairman of the commission during two tenures.

Expressing approval of Dr. Akpoveta’s commitment to doubling the number of enrollees within a year, Dr. Otene commended the DG’s dedication to ensuring quality healthcare accessibility for all residents. He affirmed the zone’s readiness to collaborate on public awareness campaigns, aiming to educate residents about the benefits of enrolling in the health insurance scheme.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Otene expressed confidence in Dr. Akpoveta’s capacity to expand the network of healthcare providers and contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health And Wellbeing) by 2030.

The collaboration between the Delta State Contributory Health Commission and the Nigeria Medical Association signifies a united front in advancing healthcare services for the people of Delta State.
