Delta State House of Assembly Approves 2.5MW Independent Power Plant, Screens Nominees for State Executive Council

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State House of Assembly has given its nod to the establishment of a 2.5 Mega Watts Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Owa-Alero, Ika Northeast Local Government Area. The request for the development of the IPP, brought forward by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, was formally presented during a plenary session by Speaker Emomotimi Guwor.

The project garnered support from the Majority Leader, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, who highlighted its potential benefits, including enhanced productivity in the area and the generation of electricity for critical government institutions, thus preventing wastage of power.

In addition to the approval of the IPP project, the Assembly received two separate letters from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. These letters sought the approval of the members for the reconstitution of the governing boards of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission and the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC).

The screening process for the last batch of eight nominees, submitted by the Governor for appointment as Commissioners and members of the State Executive Council, took place during the same plenary session.

The Assembly members representing their respective constituencies in the State Legislature presented each nominee, and subsequently, the appointments were confirmed after separate motions were put forth by the Majority Leader, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, and adopted by the House.

Speaker Emomotimi Guwor praised the sense of responsibility displayed by the House members and commended their dedication and diligence in fulfilling their duties. He also congratulated Governor Elder Sheriff Oborevwori for appointing a total of twenty-six Deltans to serve in the State Executive Council, in accordance with the Nigerian Federal Republic constitution.

The Speaker charged the Commissioner-designates to actively contribute to the success of the state government’s MORE agenda and ensure effective delivery of democracy’s dividends to the people.

The Speaker instructed the nominees to submit 35 copies of their Curriculum Vitae to the office of the Clerk before Monday, September 4, and appear for screening on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

As the House concluded its sitting, it entered a month-long recess.
