Delta State House of Assembly Passes Delta State Merit Award Scheme Bill

ASABA/Nigeria: In a significant legislative milestone, the Delta State House of Assembly has successfully navigated all stages of the enactment process for the Delta State Merit Award Scheme Bill. The bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Hon Emeka Nwaobi, representing Aniocha North, received unanimous approval during Tuesday’s session presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor.

The private member bill, which aimed to replace the Delta State Law of 2008, passed its third reading following thorough deliberations and amendments in the Committee of the Whole, chaired by the Speaker. Among its provisions, the proposed law establishes the Delta State Merit Award Scheme, delineating privileges for recipients and mandating integrity in nominee selection.

The legislation proposes the formation of the Delta State Merit Award Governing Council, empowered to nominate individuals of exemplary character who have contributed significantly to the state’s progress. These nominees, whether from public service or various fields of endeavor, will be duly recognized for their meritorious service upon approval by the Council.

Following a motion by Majority Leader Hon Emeka Nwaobi and seconded by Hon Charles Emetulu of Ndokwa West, the bill passed its final reading, signaling broad support within the assembly. Speaker Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor commended members for their diligent scrutiny, emphasizing the potential of the bill to incentivize continued excellence in service to Delta State.

Echoing the sentiment, Hon Emeka Nwaobi emphasized the law’s objective to honor individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to the state’s growth and development. As Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Information, Nwaobi lauded the 8th Assembly’s commitment to promoting excellence through legislative initiatives.

With the bill’s passage, Delta State is poised to institute a framework that recognizes and rewards outstanding contributions, fostering a culture of meritocracy and dedication to public service. The House adjourned plenary to Wednesday, marking a milestone in the state’s legislative agenda.
