Delta State Pioneers Environmental Conservation Initiative, Forges Partnership with UK Firm

ASABA/Nigeria: In a landmark move towards environmental sustainability, Delta State has emerged as a trailblazer in Nigeria by endorsing the restoration of mangrove forests, seagrass protection, and the preservation of ecosystems. The state took a decisive step forward by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Serendib Capital UK for the restoration and preservation of its mangrove forests and ecosystems. The historic signing ceremony, held at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, marked a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking at the event, lauded the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, emphasizing their visionary approach and unwavering dedication to shaping a sustainable environment for present and future generations. He underscored the critical importance of the MOU in the restoration and preservation efforts, highlighting its multifaceted benefits that encompassed environmental sustainability, job creation, infrastructure development, education, and climate resilience.

“The memorandum of understanding we just signed is very critical to the restoration and preservation of our mangrove forests and the entire ecosystem,” Governor Oborevwori stated. “Not only does this initiative prioritize environmental sustainability, but it also addresses local demands for socio-economic development and enhances our communities’ resilience to climate change and deforestation.”

Governor Oborevwori emphasized his personal commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, endorsing the groundbreaking project for mangrove and seagrass conservation. He expressed gratitude to the foreign partners for choosing Delta State as an investment destination, affirming the state’s readiness to foster a mutually beneficial partnership that promotes economic growth and empowers its people.

Managing Director of Serendib Capital UK, Mr. Rafat Rizvi, echoed Governor Oborevwori’s sentiments, expressing gratitude to the state government for the partnership. He outlined the project’s long-term objectives, which include restoring ecosystems damaged by crude oil degradation, fostering job creation, promoting education, and ensuring prosperity for future generations. Mr. Rizvi emphasized the importance of community involvement and collaboration in achieving the project’s goals, underscoring the need for sustainable environmental practices.

Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, congratulated Delta State Government for its pioneering role in the conservation project. He expressed the House’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability, highlighting recent legislative efforts to protect endangered species in Nigeria.
