Delta State Revitalizes Water Projects Across 39 Towns

OBINOMBA/Nigeria: The Delta State Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources Development, has embarked on a significant initiative to revive abandoned water projects in 39 major towns across various Local Government Areas.

Engr. Unuafe Anthony, the General Manager of STOWASSA, disclosed this during the official flagging off of water projects and the handover ceremony to contractors in Okpe Isoko, Igbide, Akoku-Uno, and Obinomba.

He stated that the projects are part of a collaborative effort between the Delta State Government and the Sustainable Urban Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) program. The aim is to tackle water scarcity and improve sanitation in rural areas.

Unuafe highlighted that the initiative focuses on rehabilitating, upgrading, and expanding the state’s water supply infrastructure to meet the growing demand for water.

He commended the Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Hon. Isaac Wilkie, for spearheading the construction and resuscitation of these water schemes, which align with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE agenda.

He urged the communities to take ownership of the water facilities and protect them from sabotage and vandalism once completed.

Speaking on behalf of the Igbide Community, retired General Paul Omu lauded the flagging off of the water project as a positive development, emphasizing that the scheme would address the community’s water challenges and help curb open defecation.

Similarly, Chief Aloy Okpelogbo, President-General of Okpe-Isoko Community, praised the state government’s efforts in restoring the moribund water scheme and pledged to mobilize the community to sustain the government’s initiative.
