ASABA/Nigeria: In response to a recent publication in which athletes and officials of Team Delta voiced their desire for his continued leadership, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, has declared that he harbours no intentions of extending or returning to his position after the expiration of his tenure.
The publication had quoted members of Team Delta advocating for Chief Okowa’s retention for an additional two years, extending his tenure beyond its conclusion, expected around January 2024.
However, Chairman Okowa swiftly quashed any such notions, asserting that such appeals were unwarranted. He underscored his lack of interest in prolonging his tenure, whether through extension or reappointment. He firmly believes that his tenure will culminate with the delivery of his best efforts, after which it should transition to new leadership.
In his own words, “First of all, I have no interest in remaining as Chairman of the Commission after my tenure, whether by extension or reappointment. I believe I have offered my best and will do so till the end of my tenure, after which the mantle should go to another hand. People were before me, and people would also have to come after me, possibly with new ideas to improve on what I would have done. That is the way it goes.”
Additionally, Okowa highlighted the importance of upholding the established laws governing the Delta State Sports Commission, particularly the stipulation defining membership and tenure. He stressed that the law clearly mandates two tenures of four years each, and he firmly supports its continued adherence.
He concluded by affirming his commitment to the Delta State sports community, pledging to remain an active member and provide support in any necessary and feasible manner. Chairman Okowa’s resolute decision not to seek an extension underscores his dedication to a smooth and lawful transition of leadership within the commission.
