Continuity in governance is not merely a political mantra but a pragmatic approach to sustainable development. The administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori in Delta State exemplifies this principle through its steadfast commitment to completing projects initiated by its predecessors. This approach not only ensures the optimal use of resources but significantly enhances the living conditions of the people.
A striking example of this progressive governance is the Delta State High Court Complex. Initiated by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, continued by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and completed under Governor Oborevwori, the complex was inaugurated by former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. At the inauguration, Jonathan lauded the state government for its credible performance and praised Governor Oborevwori for his focus on infrastructural development and his commitment to continuing projects from previous administrations.

“There are some projects that are very fundamental to the growth and development of the state, and we expect anybody who takes over the government to continue with them, and you are doing exactly that,” Jonathan said. He highlighted the High Court Complex as one of the best judiciary headquarters in the country, congratulating the Governor and the judiciary of Delta State for this exemplary project.
The former President encouraged the people of Delta State to support the Governor for the state’s overall development, warning against politically motivated efforts to undermine the government. “When you struggle to bring a governor or president down for the purpose of politics, you are bringing the state or country down. The Governor or the President is sitting with public resources, and everybody must encourage him to succeed. That is the only way we, as a nation, can grow,” he emphasized.
The judicial edifice symbolizes not just architectural grandeur but the seamless transition of visionary projects across successive administrations. Such continuity is crucial for maintaining development momentum and avoiding the wastage of public funds on abandoned projects.
Another testament to the benefits of sustained governance is the Warri City Stadium. Once an ambitious project left in limbo, it’s now been revived and is on the path to becoming a premier sports facility in the state. Governor Oborevwori’s administration has prioritized its completion, recognizing the stadium’s potential to foster community spirit, boost local economies, and nurture sporting talent. This decision underscores a broader understanding that infrastructure projects, particularly those with substantial public utility, should transcend political tenures.
The Asaba-Ughelli Road, a critical artery for Delta State, exemplifies the challenges and solutions in project continuity. The state government recently approved an upward review of the contract sum for executing some sections of this road due to the high cost of materials. This decision, as announced by Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, said the approval include the upward review for the completion of the dualization of the Ughelli-Asaba Road, specifically for Sector A, from kilometer 0+000 to 39+000, with a spur to Oleh, and the Ogwashi-Uku to Asaba part of the same road.
He also stated that the state Exco approved the completion of the dualization from Ossisa to Kwale Junction in Ogwashi-Uku, covering kilometer 92+000 to 117+000. These infrastructural upgrades are not mere expenditures but investments in the state’s future, facilitating better connectivity, economic growth, and an enhanced quality of life for residents.
Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to these projects highlights a vital lesson for all new administrations: the importance of continuity. When new governments honour and complete the unfinished contracts of their predecessors, it not only reduces the litany of ongoing works but also maximizes the benefits of public spending. Such an approach ensures that projects designed to improve living conditions reach their intended outcomes without unnecessary delays.
This action of government approach is good, as its campaign slogan was Advancing Delta, which has the M.O.R.E slogan encapsulated into it for the advancement of the state.
Governor Oborevwori’s first year in office has been marked by scrutiny from various quarters, particularly from opposition parties and dissenting voices within his own Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, a nuanced assessment by Ndokwa Reporters acknowledges the administration’s noteworthy focus on completing ongoing projects inherited upon assuming office on May 29, 2023.
This approach underscores a crucial aspect of governance that transcends political divides and personal legacies. By prioritizing the continuation and fruition of initiatives commenced by previous administrations, Governor Oborevwori’s government not only advances infrastructural development but also fosters trust, stability, and a promising trajectory for Delta State.
The commendable emphasis on continuity and completion sets a significant precedent. It ensures that the momentum of development is maintained for the collective benefit of the people, serving as a guide to the enduring impact of effective governance beyond transient political affiliations.
