
ASABA/Nigeria: Students from Delta State have clinched the top prize at the 2025 National Basic Education Debate Championship, securing the honour of representing Nigeria at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The championship, organised by the President’s Schools Debate, featured the best young debaters from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The Delta team emerged victorious after a series of rigorous rounds that tested their oratory, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
The winning team comprises Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ekhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).
Receiving the champions at Government House, Asaba, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori hailed their triumph as a reflection of his administration’s investment in education. “This win proves that our efforts in renovating schools, recruiting and training teachers, and promoting extracurricular activities are paying off,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori praised the students as “true ambassadors of Delta State,” highlighting their intellectual depth and eloquence. He expressed pride that the team’s success was achieved through local training, noting that it underscored the state’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.
“Delta State is proud to sponsor your trip to the World Championship without hesitation,” the governor announced, promising full state sponsorship for the Qatar event. He urged the students to conduct themselves honourably and seize the opportunity to shine on the global stage.
The governor also lauded the students’ parents for their support and described the victory as a stepping stone to greater achievements. “You have started well, and by God’s grace, you will finish well,” he said.
Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, and SUBEB Chairman, Hon. Samuel Mariere, joined in celebrating the students, commending their excellence and pledging further support as they prepare for the international contest.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Wisdom Chukwuma thanked the governor for his support and promised that they would make Delta State and Nigeria proud at the global level.
