ASABA/Nigeria: The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Delta State Government, has announced plans to host a five-day capacity building workshop for 150 teachers drawn from the state’s 25 local government areas.
The training, titled Strengthening Teacher English Proficiency (STEP), is aimed at enhancing teachers’ communication skills and improving classroom effectiveness, particularly in the teaching of English language at the basic education level.
According to the organisers, the workshop will emphasise a shift from traditional, teacher-dominated methods to modern learner-centred approaches that encourage active participation by pupils in the teaching and learning process.
In a joint statement signed by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Samuel Mariere, and the Director of the Teacher Development Department, Eru Ezefili, the programme is described as a specialised and intensive intervention designed to strengthen instructional delivery across public primary schools in the state.
The statement noted that the workshop is residential and scheduled to hold from February 9 to February 13, 2026, with daily sessions commencing at 9:00 a.m.
The venue for the training is Peace Garden Hotel International, located at No. 1 Justus Street, Igretakpere, Ughelli, in Ughelli North.
SUBEB said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Delta State Government to improve the quality of basic education through continuous professional development of teachers, stressing that improved language proficiency and learner engagement are critical to better educational outcomes across the state.
