Delta Will Gain More from Oborevwori’s Defection to APC – Ogorugba

OZORO/Nigeria: Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Godwin Ogorugba, has described Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a strategic blessing for the people of Delta State.
Speaking in an interview with Leadership Hub for Justice and Economic Advancement (LJE Nigeria) in his office in Ozoro on Monday, Ogorugba hailed the governor’s decision as a bold and visionary move that would position the state for greater alignment with the federal government and attract broader developmental benefits under the Tinubu-led APC administration.
“The governor’s defection is not just politics—it’s strategy. It will open more doors for Deltans and bring us closer to the centre, where we can benefit more from federal programmes,” Ogorugba said.
The council boss also lauded Governor Oborevwori’s consistent support for local government autonomy, noting that Delta was among the few states unaffected by the recent Supreme Court ruling on local government funds.
“In Delta, we had no need to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling because our governor has never tampered with local government allocations. He has always respected our autonomy and supported our operations,” he stated.
Ogorugba highlighted a series of achievements by his administration, including the ongoing construction of a new administrative complex, perimeter fencing, and a modern gatehouse at the council secretariat. He said nine roads were currently under rehabilitation, while new streets were being opened across the local government.
He also disclosed that staff quarters for nurses were under construction in all 18 primary health centres, with plans to install solar power systems to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
“We want to make sure our health centres are fully functional, especially at night. That’s why we’re building staff quarters and introducing solar solutions to replace dependence on generators,” he said.
On economic empowerment, Ogorugba announced the construction and renovation of over 200 shops and the implementation of youth digital skills training and women empowerment schemes. He said the council was preparing to distribute farm inputs, fertilizers, and financial support to women farmers to promote food security and improve livelihoods.
“Our focus is on helping families grow food and generate income. If people can’t feed themselves, then nothing else matters. We’re equipping our women with what they need to succeed,” he explained.
In education, Ogorugba said the council had covered examination fees for all Primary Six pupils and was working towards providing nearly free primary education, including textbooks, notebooks, sandals, school bags, and report cards.
“Many rural families are struggling to send their children to school. We’re stepping in to bridge that gap, starting from the foundation level,” he added.
On security, the chairman commended the synergy between security agencies and local vigilante groups, which he said had led to a significant drop in crime, particularly in the university environment within the local government. He revealed plans to further equip vigilante units for improved intelligence gathering and community protection.
Ogorugba reaffirmed his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the MORE Agenda of Governor Oborevwori, saying the governor’s move to the APC would further integrate Delta State into national development.
“It’s a win-win for us. With Governor Oborevwori now in the APC, Delta State is better positioned to benefit from the federal government. This is a new chapter of opportunity for our people,” he declared.
