ILORIN/Nigeria: For the third time, Delta State has won the 3rd edition of the National Youth Games held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Team Delta emerged the overall champions after winning 57 medals, comprising of 20 gold, 14 silver and 23 bronze in the 10-day youths championship.
The 3rd edition was tagged Ilorin 2017.
The state had previously won the maiden and second editions of the championship.
As the defending champions, athletes from the state once again showed their superiority over other states in most events including in swimming, boxing and field events.
The Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, congratulated the team for their performance and always doing the state proud.
Okowa noted that despite the strong performance from athletes from other states, Team Delta came victorious defeating both overaged athletes deployed by some state for the youths’ games.
He thanked the State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for the timely release of funds for the state contingent to attend this year’s edition of the championship despite the inadequate resources which prevented some of the states of the federation from participating.
