DEMOCRACY DAY: Our Struggling Democracy Better Than Military- Nigerians

OGHARA/Nigeria: Some Citizens in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta state who aired their views concerning democracy in Nigeria said Nigeria as a country who practice the democratic system of government have succeeded to an extent as citizens are involved in the election of their representatives.
While some of the citizens appreciates the democratic system of government saying it is better than other forms of government such as the military system of government, some said democracy is not fully practice in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalist in Jesse town of the local, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Community Development, Hon Jude Fregene affirmed democracy as a system of government is better than the military system of government.
He noted that the worse civilian government is better than the military system of government because according to him the citizens has a say in the democratic system of government.
The governor’s aide pointed out that the democratic system of government allows the citizens to decide who represent them saying it is not an autocratic government rather it is the government that is decided by the people.
He said the Okowa-led administration has so far demonstrated the democratic system of government in all angles as Deltans testify of it on a daily basis.
The SSA described the Governor as the governor of the people by the people and for the people who has done marvellously well in terms of development with people-oriented projects that have transformed the lives of the people positively.
Fregene, a lawyer noted that for democracy to be said to have taken place, government policy must reflect the will of the people, in terms of policy formulation and implementations.
He urged the Nigeria government to improve more on the practice of democracy by allowing the will of the people to come to place in choosing their leaders not imposing on them.
The SSA said since 1999 till date there is a big different between the Civilian rule and the military rule as rule of law prevail under democracy as against military dictatoria inclination.
He noted that there is more development today as government now work in line with the need of the people.
Also speaking in Oghara, the headquarters of the local government, Mr Philip Edojah a civil servant, said democracy is not well practice in the country as some politicians still buy their way through the aide of godfathering.
Mr Philip noted that most leaders now have godfather who now dictate for them on how to rule their people instead of meeting the needs of the citizens.
He agreed that though democracy is not fully practice in the country the system is still far better than the military system of government.
