Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Community Development, Dr. Patrick Ighomrore

EFFURUN/Nigeria: As Nigerians marked Democracy Day on June 12, 2025,  Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Community Development, Dr. Patrick Ighomrore, has called on citizens and leaders alike to uphold the core values of democracy by ensuring that governance translates into meaningful development for all. He said the true essence of democracy lies not only in the right to vote but in building systems that respect the will of the people, promote inclusivity, and improve the quality of life across communities.

Dr. Ighomrore, in a statement commemorating the occasion, paid glowing tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, whose sacrifice remains a cornerstone of the nation’s democratic evolution. He said June 12 must serve as a reminder of the collective struggles and the duty of both citizens and government to safeguard and strengthen democratic institutions.

“Democracy must be people-centered. It must bring about justice, equity, and empowerment, especially at the grassroots where the impact of governance is most needed,” he stated. “The sacrifices of our democratic icons should not be in vain. We must renew our commitment to building a society where every citizen, regardless of status or location, enjoys the dividends of democracy.”

The SSA commended Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his leadership under the MORE agenda, which he said reflects a genuine effort to deepen democracy through inclusive governance and development-focused policies. He also lauded the governor’s attention to rural communities, which he noted is helping bridge the gap between government and the people.

Dr. Ighomrore urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain hopeful and actively engaged in democratic processes, adding that the future of the country depends on collective responsibility and unity. “Democracy is not a destination but a journey. As we celebrate today, let us recommit ourselves to truth, justice, and service to humanity,” he said.
