WARRI/Nigeria: In an effort to alleviate poverty and enhance the quality of life in Delta State’s oil-bearing communities, the wives of the DESOPADEC Board members, led by Mrs. Maureen Nani, have donated cash, food, medical supplies, and other essential items worth millions of naira to the elderly in Warri and nearby riverine areas.
The wives led by Mrs. Maureen Nani and Mrs. Flora Ochonogor, visited the Catholic Old People’s Home on Bowen Avenue, Warri South Local Government Area. Speaking to reporters, Mrs. Nani, the wife of DESOPADEC’s Chairman, stated that the gesture was in celebration of their husbands’ first anniversary in office. “We are here on behalf of our spouses to extend our love and care to our senior citizens in these challenging times. We share the pain of our elderly, especially those in the riverine areas; hence, we are here to provide these donations to cushion inflation’s effect on the economy,” she said.
Mrs. Flora Ochonogor, wife of DESOPADEC’s Managing Director and CEO, emphasized that this initiative would continue across other communities within the mandate area. “It is going to be a continuous exercise, and we will continue providing food and medical aid to the less privileged in our oil-bearing communities as well as IDP camps in Delta State,” she added.
Reverend Father Emmanuel Ogbe, representing the home’s coordinator, Reverend Father Benedict Ukutegbe, expressed gratitude for the donations. He assured that the items would be distributed among other senior citizens in the riverine communities and appealed to the board for assistance in expanding the home to accommodate more elderly residents. “We pray for God’s guidance and more appointments for all members of the DESOPADEC board,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Pa Tom Oboh, voiced his appreciation, saying, “We thank God for what you have given us today; it is what we desire. I pray that God will continue to bless your work.”
