BOJ-BOJI/Nigeria: A high-tension cable allegedly belonging to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), has fallen on some shops, along the Old Abraka Road in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta, destroying property worth millions of naira.
It was gathered the incident took place in the middle of last night while power was on.
According to our sources, the damage would have been more if people were still in their various shops and that fire was prevented from spreading to other buildings by the swift response of personnel of Nigeria Fire Service in the area.
One of the victims, Mr Ignatius Festus, a welder, said that he only arrived at his shop in the morning to behold the destruction of his property and that of his neighbors.
“We had light all though yesterday, showing up this morning to see the darkest day of my life. I was told that it is high-tension cable that fell on the roof of our shops.
“My welding machine, generator, coil and other equipment I may not be able to recall at the moment were totally wrecked,” he stated
While commending the men of Nigeria Fire Service for their intervention, Mr Festus appealed to governments at all levels and well-meaning individuals in the society to come to their aid.
In his remarks, a residence of the area, who gave his name simply as Okoh, however called on authorities concerned to put measures on ground to avert such occurrences.
“As we all know, we are about to welcome the rainy season, BEDC officials, fire service and other security agencies must be at alert in order to curb unnecessary loses,” he noted.
