Divine Mercy: Nigerians called to Turn To God

Devine Mercy

Asaba: The Catholic Church all over the world celebrated Divine Mercy today, Sunday (03/04/16) with Rev. Fr. Festus Owakue calling on Nigerians to turn to God in their activities.

Rev. Fr. Owakue who is the Assistant Parish Priest, Catholic Church of the Ascension, Asaba in a homily during the Sunday Mass, said, Nigerians should turn to God, appreciate God, do His will and things will turn around positively for the country.

The Church service signalled the commencement of the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) week which will culminate in the celebration of Mothering Sunday next Sunday.

The occasion featured the unveiling of status of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. He observed that Nigerians deserve to give thanks to God for His mercy, stating that Nigeria could be greater if Nigerians put God first in what they do.

According to him, “We are alive today because of the mercy of God; as a country, as individuals, some of us have committed worse sins than that of Sodom and Gomorrah but, we are alive today because of His mercy.”

“We should repent from our sins and put God first in what we do and things will turn around for our country because we will not only carry out our activities with the fear of God but, with the love for God, our neighbours and our country,” he said, emphasizing, “we should acknowledge our sins and God will forgive us.”

He used the occasion to disclose that the confession of sins as carried out in the Catholic Church was in line with the Biblical injunction that, “if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven and the Priest has been anointed to dispense the grace to those who come for confession; we must have faith in Jesus who is present in the blessed sacrament.”
