‘Don’t Give Up, Things Will Get Better’: NGO Launches Mental Health Campaign in Delta’s Bomadi

BOMADI/Nigeria: In response to the mounting economic hardships affecting Deltans, the Eye on the Future Initiative (EFI), a non-governmental organisation, has launched a mental health outreach programme aimed at supporting local residents in Bomadi, Delta State. The initiative, rolled out in collaboration with the Bomadi local government council, adopts the Pidgin-English theme, “Nor Go Kill Yourself, E Go Better” – an urgent appeal to individuals not to lose hope amid Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

The event, held at the council’s headquarters, provided free health screenings, advice on mental wellbeing, and encouragement for residents to persevere in these trying times. Attendees received guidance on managing stress and practical recommendations for maintaining good health.

Comrade Josephine Omordior, EFI’s Executive Director, shared with journalists the inspiration behind the outreach. “We know that so many people are under immense stress due to the country’s economic situation, often leading to depression and other mental health struggles. This programme’s theme, ‘Nor Go Kill Yourself, E Go Better,’ is a reminder of hope and resilience. We are here to uplift people’s spirits and promote mental wellness,” Omordior remarked.

She highlighted the current rise in health issues related to stress, including cases of high blood pressure, which often go unnoticed. “This outreach is about helping individuals understand their health status, which is crucial in preventing unexpected health crises,” she added.

Chairman of EFI’s Board of Trustees, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, echoed Omordior’s sentiments, emphasising the programme’s focus on the community’s mental health needs. “The frustrations and challenges people are facing today are products of years of economic mismanagement, not just by the present government but by successive administrations. With resources at our disposal, we ought to be thriving, but we lack the leadership needed to steer us there,” Sorokwu said.

He commended Hon. Dagidi Andaye, the Bomadi Council Chairman, for his commitment to the welfare of the community, describing him as “a leader with a heart for the people.” Sorokwu added, “A healthy mind leads to a prosperous life, and today’s outreach aims to mobilise the grassroots, who are the backbone of our nation.”

Mr. Famous Ofurobiri, Secretary to the Local Government and representative of Hon. Dagidi Andaye, praised EFI’s initiative as timely. “The theme, ‘Nor Go Kill Yourself, E Go Better,’ resonates deeply. This programme offers support to those facing life’s pressures and reminds them not to fall into despair,” Ofurobiri said. He also noted the council’s ongoing Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme, which aims to provide Bomadi residents with self-sustaining skills to help them cope with economic challenges.

Hon. Adaka Amame-eniye, Supervisor for Health in Bomadi, called the programme “a welcome development,” advising residents to prioritise their mental and physical health despite the financial hardships. “Many are facing untold difficulties, both mentally and physically. I encourage all to come forward, understand their health status, and take necessary precautions,” he urged.

Participants expressed appreciation for the programme, with residents like Mrs. Patience Talent and Mrs. Okerede William highlighting the useful advice they received on managing blood pressure and diet. Mrs. William shared, “After my check-up, I was advised to reduce fatty foods. I’m grateful for the free health screening and the guidance.”

The event culminated in the presentation of a plaque to Hon. Andaye as a patron of EFI, received on his behalf by Secretary Ofurobiri. A road walk along major streets in Bomadi also formed part of the campaign, raising awareness about the importance of mental health.

EFI’s outreach has been warmly welcomed by the Bomadi community, providing much-needed support and reminding residents that even in challenging times, resilience and hope are vital for a brighter tomorrow.
