DOPF Lauds Community Security Bill, Pushes for Immediate Enforcement

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, at Tuesday’s Plenary.

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has applauded the Delta State House of Assembly for passing the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill, describing it as a bold and timely response to the worsening insecurity across the state.

In a press statement signed by its Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha, the forum said the legislation marks a significant shift toward a community-driven approach to safeguarding lives and livelihoods in Delta communities.

DOPF noted that it had consistently advocated for a holistic security architecture rooted in the grassroots to complement existing state and federal structures. “The passage of this bill is a clear indication that the House of Assembly has not only listened to the yearnings of the people but also acted decisively to protect them,” the statement read.

The body of online media professionals emphasized that the Community Security Corps would restore confidence, particularly in rural areas plagued by kidnappings, herder-farmer clashes, and other violent crimes. It stressed that the Corps’ reliance on operatives drawn from local communities is a strategic advantage, given their knowledge of local terrains and dynamics.

DOPF urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently assent to the bill, noting that the speed of implementation could make the difference between escalating insecurity and the restoration of peace. “Prompt signing of the bill into law will set the tone for its immediate implementation, ensuring that communities currently under threat from criminal elements begin to enjoy renewed hope, protection, and stability,” it stated.

The forum also called for a robust framework for implementation backed by transparency, adequate funding, and synergy with conventional security agencies, traditional rulers, and local leaders.

DOPF maintained that improved rural security would translate to increased food production, a boost in agribusiness, and progress toward food security in the state. It pledged the support of its members toward sensitizing the public on the new law and ensuring it garners the acceptance it deserves.

The Forum concluded by commending the lawmakers for what it described as a “patriotic move to defend the vulnerable and protect the future of Delta.”
