DSCTDA Under New Management Faces Backlash for Alleged Oppressive Practices

ASABA/Nigeria: Following a transition in leadership at the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) after over 8 years, hopes were high for a renewed focus on development under the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led government’s agenda of ‘MORE AGENDA.’ However, recent actions by the agency have sparked controversy, with allegations of oppressive tactics and failure to address the needs of ordinary Deltans.

Established to enhance Asaba’s status as a capital city and promote comprehensive development in the state capital territory, the DSCTDA was expected to play a pivotal role in fostering tourism, improving living conditions, and stimulating economic growth. Yet, concerns have emerged regarding its purported neglect of these objectives, leading to grievances among residents.

Critics argue that instead of alleviating hardships, DSCTDA’s actions have exacerbated them. Reports indicate a trend of imposing unjustifiable fines on residents, creating financial burdens particularly during a period of economic strain. The agency’s enforcement measures, including arbitrary fines and punitive actions, have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.

Notably, voices both within and outside Delta State have expressed dismay at what they perceive as a departure from the mandate of intervention agencies. While such entities are typically expected to provide support and relief to communities, DSCTDA’s alleged approach has been characterized by punitive measures rather than assistance.

Instances of individuals being fined exorbitant amounts for infractions related to waste disposal have sparked outrage. Residents, including petty traders and retirees, have recounted tales of financial strain and hardship resulting from DSCTDA’s enforcement actions. The agency’s purported focus on trivial infractions, such as the possession of specified waste bins, has further fueled discontent.

Moreover, concerns have been raised about the disparity between DSCTDA’s enforcement efforts and the state of public infrastructure. Observers point to instances of neglect, such as the dilapidated state of the Delta State Secretariat premises, as evidence of misplaced priorities. While residents are penalized for minor offenses, essential services and facilities remain in disrepair, raising questions about the agency’s effectiveness and accountability.

In response to mounting criticism, calls for greater transparency and accountability within DSCTDA have grown louder. Residents, civil society groups, and stakeholders have called for reforms to ensure that the agency aligns with its mandate and serves the interests of the people.

As debates surrounding DSCTDA’s role and actions continue, the agency finds itself at a crossroads, facing scrutiny over its approach to governance and development. The outcome of ongoing discussions and potential reforms will likely shape its trajectory and impact on Delta State’s residents in the years to come.
