ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Ministry of Transport has mapped a bi-monthly enforcement strategy to effectively decongest all traffic flash points in Warri, Effurun and Asaba.
The Commissioner, Mr Vincent Uduaghan, handed down the directive in a circular letter to Directors of Land Transport (DLT), Director of Vehicle Inspection (DVI) as well as the Director-General, Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) for prompt attention.
Mr Uduaghan noted “Activities of recalcitrant motorists and other road users, such as activities of market women trading along road sides have made it difficult to experience free flow of traffic in cities such as Asaba, Warri and Effurun in recent times.
“It is needless to spend appreciable man hour than is expected on our roads. All traffic anomalies would be addressed before and after the yuletide period, with traffic strategies that would soon be unveiled”.
According to the Commissioner, the strategy would include, enforcement of no-parking at designated areas in Asaba, Warri and Effurun, elimination of street trading and confiscation of goods displayed by roadsides to ensure free flow of traffic in Asaba, Warri and Effurun and the dismantling of unauthorized parks in Asaba, Warri and Effurun.
Acting on the directive, the Director of Vehicle Inspection (DVI), Engr. Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha who led personnel of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) to clear and control traffic to enable free flow of traffic.
In a chat, he identified some traffic flash points in Asaba to include, Summit Junction, Hospital roundabout (FMC), Ogbeogonogo Market, the two ends of Ibusa Roads Junctions as well as Abraka Market Area along the busy Onitsha-Asaba Express way.
Engineer Oyakemeagbegha advised motorists and other road users to always make sure that they observe road signs and obey traffic rules and regulations in order to avoid road crashes, saying “The roads are becoming very busy, with heavy traffic in view of the yuletide season that is fast approaching.”
