EFFURUN/Nigeria: In order for motorists and other road users to experience free flow of traffic and to check the incessant traffic gridlock at the Effurun roundabout, the Commissioner for Transport, Sir Vincent Uduaghan has ordered the immediate removal of the illegal parks and trading activities within the roundabout.
Sir Uduaghan gave the order when he accessed the remote causes of the gridlock at the Effurun roundabout in company of the State Works Commissioner, Chief James Augoye.
The Director of Land Transport, Mr Victor Omoniyi who coordinated the dismantling exercise of shanties used for illegal business activities as well as the removal of vehicles parked indiscriminately within the Effurun roundabout, impounded vehicles and confiscated wares of traders displayed along shoulders of roads and major junctions.
The combined taskforce of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Environment asked car dealers along the Airport Road to relocate or face the consequences of their actions as well as mechanics using bus stops as workshops.
Also at Airport Road Junction, business owners occupying a building were sanctioned, having failed to adhere to instruction earlier given them to clear all wastes around their business premises and were informed that their actions could lead to outright sealing of the business premises due to the dirt generated by their activities.
The public were sensitized on the implications of street trading on road shoulders and building on water channels, living and trading under high-tension wires.
In an interview, the Director of Land Transport Mr Victor Omoniyi, an engineer, appealed to motorists and traders to always park their vehicles at designated parks and urged traders to avoid displaying their wares on walkways and at other unauthorized places that could impede free flow of traffic in the State.
On the other hand, the representative of the Ministry of Environment, Comrade Kingsley Iweka, stated that traders should stop the discharge of waste in the drains and clear waste around their business premises, emphasizing the need for them to exercise caution not to destroy the aesthetic beauty of the environment.
The various leaders of the combined taskforces thanked the State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, for his mandate in constructing and rehabilitating roads across the State as well as the Commissioner for Transport, Sir Vincent Uduaghan and his Environment counterpart, Chief John Nani.
The areas checked by the taskforce included Effurun and DSC Roundabouts, PTI, Refinery, Jakpa and Airport Junctions as well as Airport Road.
