ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government said it will not condone trafficking or the sale of children or other unethical practices in the process of child adoption.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Flora Alatan, gave the warning during a scheduled meeting with owners of orphanages in the state at the Conference Hall of the ministry in Asaba.
The commissioner pointed out that looking after orphans took more than just erecting structures and urged them to remain conscious of their responsibilities by according vulnerable children in the state with a solid foundation and a meaningful livelihood.
Mr Alatan advised them against keeping orphans in their homes for too long saying it tended to have a negative effect on the orphans eventually when integrate with society.
She however commended the proprietors and proprietresses of orphanages in the state for the humanitarian services they render to orphans on a daily basis.
Alatan, while responding to some of the challenges faced, said that her ministry was looking into the issue of children with special needs and assured he operators that government would create a special home in Asaba with trained personnel to cater for such children with special needs and handicapped alike.
She advised the unregistered homes to do the needful by getting registered and approved before they become tagged as illegal and have to be forcefully shut down.
The commissioner also warned that anyone engaged in running homes for profit rather than rendering expected humanitarian services would never achieve anything tangible from such, saying “The blood of many innocent children were crying out.”
