ABUJA/Nigeria: In a week-long series of diplomatic meetings from October 18 to October 24, 2023, the ECOWAS Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations intensified its efforts to foster collaboration and enhance humanitarian support within the ECOWAS region.
On October 18, Ambassador Kinza Jawara Njai, the Permanent Observer representing ECOWAS at the United Nations, held a significant meeting with Ms. Sophie Garde Thomle, Deputy Director of OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) for the West African region. During this high-level discussion, they delved into OCHA’s initiatives in the ECOWAS region, with a particular focus on strengthening humanitarian assistance to the Republic of Niger.
Moving ahead to October 20, 2023, Ambassador Kinza Jawara Njai welcomed H.E. Ms. Tania Romualdo, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cabo Verde to the United Nations. Both representatives emphasized the imperative need for regional cooperation and coherence within the broader United Nations framework.
Ambassador Jawara Njai reaffirmed the ECOWAS Permanent Observer Mission’s unwavering commitment to enhancing collaboration between ECOWAS and all Permanent Representations at the United Nations, especially those of ECOWAS Member States, through systematic engagements aimed at better coordination of actions on the international stage.
The week concluded on October 24, 2023, with a courtesy visit from H.E. Oumarou Ganou, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Burkina Faso to the United Nations to the ECOWAS Permanent Observer.
During their discussions, Ambassador Kinza Jawara stressed the significance of sustained engagements to further the collective interests of the ECOWAS region and highlighted ongoing ECOWAS initiatives in Burkina Faso, particularly in the realm of humanitarian support. Ambassador Jawara-Njai reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting the transition process in the Republic of Burkina Faso.
