Education Commissioner Attributes Shortage of Teachers To Retirement, Says Govt. Is Tackling the Challenge

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu has attributed the shortage of teachers in public schools in the state to retirement, saying that the government is tackling the challenge.

Mrs. Ezewu stated this in Asaba when the Chairman of My Doc Educational Foundation, Dr. Uchemefuna Ewolor accompanied by the traditional ruler of Idumuje- Unor and other community leaders paid her a courtesy call.

The Secondary Education Commissioner Commended Dr. Uchemefuna Ewolor and other well-meaning individuals in the community for complementing the efforts of the State Government in providing a conducive learning environment for their children.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro said that the administration of Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa 2016 organised a Stakeholders’ Summit in Asaba to brainstorm on how effective the sector could be driven for the overall benefits of the state.

Mr. Oghoro, hinted that one of the recommendations of the Summit was that there was need for the State Government to partner with the private sector to ensure that the free educational policy of the State Government was achieved.

On the request of My Doc Educational Foundation Chairman that Idumuje Mixed Secondary School, Idumuje-Unor needed teachers, Mr. Oghoro said that the State Government had a policy that every newly employed teacher would teach in the grassroots areas for a minimum of five years before being considered for redeployment.

He said that the government was renovating dilapidated structures in schools across the state including Idumuje Mixed Secondary School, adding that the state was making a tremendous effort in that direction.

Earlier, the Chairman of My Doc Educational Foundation, Dr. Uchemefuna Ewolor said that the school was in dire need of teachers, stressing that his foundation engaged some teachers to cushion the effects of inadequate teachers.

Dr. Ewolor, stated that the foundation in collaboration with some well-meaning Indigenous indegines of the community provided six computers, and solar light and we’ll equip the library in the school.

While thanking the State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa for the renovation of classroom blocks at Idumuje Mixed Secondary School, Idumuje-Unor, Dr. Ewolor appealed to the Ministry to ensure continuous monitoring of teachers to ensure that they carry out their duties effectively.
