ASABA/Nigeria: Delta-based journalist, author and media entrepreneur Lady Ejiro Umukoro has been celebrated on her 50th birthday by Dr Nelson Egware, Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Media, who highlighted her contributions to investigative journalism, literary development and the mentoring of emerging media professionals.
In a congratulatory message issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Egware described Umukoro as an accomplished media practitioner whose work across journalism, publishing and advocacy has earned her recognition beyond Nigeria.
Umukoro, who has Isoko and Urhobo roots, is the president and publisher of LightRay Media, Books and Creative Society, an organisation involved in media, literature and creative development.
Her professional recognition includes the Distinguished Changemaker Award of the United States Agency for Global Media and an international communications award associated with the British Council. She is also an Agora Policy Fellow, a Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Report Women Leadership Fellow and a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors.
Beyond broadcasting and investigative reporting, Umukoro has established a presence in literary circles through her DISTORTION series, which explores social issues through long-form storytelling. The books have also been associated with efforts to promote literature and public awareness of difficult social questions.
Egware’s congratulatory message highlighted the social impact attributed to Umukoro’s writing and investigative work, including reporting connected with harmful traditional practices and the case involving the killing of university student Elozino Ogege. Claims about the direct outcomes of individual investigations require assessment against the relevant records and reporting.
The governor’s media aide also commended Umukoro’s commitment to professional mentorship and talent development, noting the importance of experienced journalists helping younger practitioners build their skills and contribute meaningfully to society.
He wished her good health, greater achievements and continued success, expressing confidence that her work in journalism, education, publishing and the creative economy would continue to influence future generations.
The birthday recognition comes as Umukoro’s professional interests span broadcasting, investigative reporting, authorship and media capacity development—fields in which storytelling can contribute to public understanding and wider conversations about social change.
