ABUJA/Nigeria: The Media Office of the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, OON, has alerted the public to alleged plots by certain politicians to launch a smear campaign against him, describing the move as a desperate attempt to undermine his soaring popularity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the office said the campaigners had resorted to mischief and falsehood, including the creation of a fake Facebook page in the name of a news outlet, Dailyreport.ng, to publish fabricated claims against Elumelu.

The false report, purportedly posted on August 14, 2025, alleged that Elumelu made political comments at a rally in Asaba on August 9. However, the Media Office dismissed the report as “cheap mischief,” stressing that no such rally took place and that Elumelu had not attended any political gathering in recent times.

“Our investigation revealed that the individual who circulated the post was recruited and sponsored by cowardly political elements who, being jittery over the rising popularity of the immediate past Minority Leader, have now resorted to criminal tendencies of faking news sites to mislead the public,” the statement read.

It further disclosed that there were ongoing plots to sponsor hack writers to publish malicious articles against Elumelu in a bid to tarnish his image. The Media Office, however, cautioned those behind the alleged smear campaign, warning that Nigerians could see through their “cheap lies and misrepresentation.”

While noting that Elumelu had chosen to forgive the perpetrators, the Media Office emphasized that it would not hesitate to take strong legal and professional action should the attacks persist.

“The public must remain vigilant. These desperate politicians cannot sway the people with fabrications. Should they fail to retrace their steps, this office will take decisive action to defend the reputation of Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu,” the statement concluded.
