WARRI/Nigeria: No fewer than 100 people, who contravened the Delta State Environmental Sanitation Law, were today tried and prosecuted by the state’s mobile court in Warri South Council Area.

The alleged violators were arrested and tried by the state’s mobile courts for violating the monthly state environmental sanitation held today, Saturday, February 26.

Chairman of the Delta State Task Force on Environment, Syvester Oromoni, told newsmen shortly after the monthly environmental sanitation in Warri South, that the mobile courts would continue to prosecute violators until people learn to obey environmental laws of the state.

He said that it was no longer going to be business as usual, adding that the state government would continue to use all lawful means to ensure that the state is kept clean.

Oromoni, however, appealed to Deltans to always keep their environment clean at all times.

The Supervisor for Environment, Warri South Local Government Council, Mr Omawumi Elete, told newsmen shortly after monitoring the exercise, that the Chairman of the council, Dr Michael Tidi, has given a matching order that the council must be kept clean.

According to him, the violators were arrested along major roads and markets in the oil rich city of Warri.

He noted that the sanitation exercise was a huge success compared to previous ones with regard to level of compliance.

“We were able to arrest over 100 defaulters and they were charged to our mobile courts which imposed some fines on them,” he said.

Omawumi also commended the security agencies and other groups who participated during the exercise.

He, however, called on the public to continue to give the government the necessary support in order to keep the area clean.

Recall that, Dr Michael Tidi, Chairman of the Warri South Council, had earlier said that one of his major priorities is to ensure that the council remained one of the cleanest in the state and beyond.
