WARRI/Nigeria: Students of Delta State Origin from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, had received the long awaited bursary payments, which since inceptions of the commission had been a practice, but for the last oil price fall, which affected the payment.
From the detail of payments to students of the various ethnic nationalities that make up the commission, it showed a total of 8, 830 students had so far benefited from the disbursement of the fund, out of the 9000 students that were targeted with a budget of N270, 000.000.
The 8, 830 students beneficiaries, received the sum of N30, 000.00, which was paid directly into their accounts.
According to the document, while the four ethnic groups of Ijaw, Isoko, Itsekiri, and Ndokwa had a total of I500 each, students target, the Urhobo nationality, had the highest number of 3000, these may be connected to the fact that the ethnic group also has the highest number of staff in the commission.
The report however showed that about 170 of the total number of 9000 targeted beneficiaries could not be paid because of inconsistence in the student details, such as the bank records.
Investigation by Ndokwa Reporters discovered that the commission could not meet up with the huge numbers of students from the area, because of limited funds. It appeals to those who could not access the fund to be patience with the commission.
It was further revealed that, the process was done transparently, as the first set of applicants were captured, to get the 9000 budgeted for, this was in response to the planned protest by some students who could not be paid.
