Ebedei: The practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), is an age long cultural practice that needs to be stopped because of its negative health implication.
This statement was made by Hon Ochor Chris Ochor, the Executive Director Social Services Development, on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, why commenting on the seminar organised in Ebedei, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta state, on Saturday 4 March, 2017, by Miss Maureen Achugbe, the Nwa Ada Ndokwa Youth Ambassador.
Hon Ochor who was represented by Mr Frank Enefazu, His Media Assistant on New Media, called on parents to consider the idea and join hands with the government to ensure that female circumcision is stopped as it has no biblical injunction and health benefits, but rather pains and discomfort to the girl child.
“This long time cultural practice has no health and biblical benefits, but rather carries with it negative health problems and the practice have to be stopped”. He said.
Hon Ochor said for the practice to be stopped, parents have to agree. They have to know the health implication of the act of Female Genital Mutilation.
While appreciating the organisers of the program for the courage to come up with such topic, he tasked parents to ensure the proper training of their children, so that as they grow they will impact positive contribution to their communities.
He noted that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow, and they need to be properly trained, with fear of God, while the youths should equally reciprocate the efforts of their parents, by shunning all acts capable of tarnishing their images.
The one day seminar which was attended by many people from Ukwuani Council Area had the theme: Parenting, with sub topic on Female Genital Mutilation, Breast Cancer, and diabetes.
The Executive Vice Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government Council, Hon (Dr) Kingsley Ojieh, who was the first speaker, delivered the talk on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and Breast Cancer.
The event was organised by Miss Maureen Achugbe, the Nwa Ada Ndokwa Youth Ambassador, for the 2016 as part of her Pet Project for her one year reign.
