Foundation to Provide Free Artificial Limbs to 300 Amputees in Anambra State, Aiming to Restore Mobility and Dignity

AWKA/Nigeria: The Agocares Foundation for Persons with Disabilities has announced plans to distribute free artificial limbs to 300 amputees in Anambra State. The initiative, aimed at restoring mobility and function, seeks to address the challenges faced by amputees in the region.

Mrs. Gloria Katchy, Chairperson of the foundation, spoke to Newsmen in Awka, emphasizing the impact of amputation on individuals’ lives. She noted, “Amputation is a serious issue that has stolen the joy and livelihood of many amputees.”

Katchy highlighted the financial burden of acquiring artificial limbs, which can cost between N950,000 to N1.8 million, making them unaffordable for many. She stated, “Many of them use crutches and wheelchairs, which is cumbersome and deters them from living normal lives. The artificial limbs function almost as perfectly as the limbs that have been lost.”

The foundation will begin measurements for amputees in Anambra State on February 20 and 21 at the Disabilities’ Right Commission at the Women Development Centre, Awka. Katchy also emphasized the importance of counseling and education about limb loss to prevent stigmatization of amputees.
