AWKA/Nigeria: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has called on its Special Marshals to be more security conscious and prioritize their personal safety while performing their duties across the state.
The Sector Commander, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, made the appeal on Saturday during the 2025 Special Marshal Sectoral Workshop held in Awka. The event, themed “Enhancing Security and Strategies for Special Marshal Operations,” was organised by the FRSC Special Duties and External Relations (Special Marshals Section).
Asekhauno described the Special Marshals as Africa’s largest volunteer corps and a vital component of the FRSC’s mission to ensure safer roads. She emphasised that their safety remains a top priority for the Corps, especially in light of prevailing security challenges in the country.
“Security awareness is essential in today’s environment,” she said. “We encourage Special Marshals to be alert, avoid unnecessary confrontations, operate only within approved routes, wear proper identification, and maintain constant communication with regular officers and security agencies during field operations. Any suspicious activity or threat to safety should be reported immediately.”
The Sector Commander commended the volunteers for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices toward promoting safer roads across Anambra State.
Speaking on behalf of the National Coordinator of FRSC Special Marshals, Mr. Adaji Usman, the National Secretary, Mr. Friday Ekhator, noted that the workshop was timely, given the rising insecurity nationwide. He urged participants to remain vigilant, disciplined, and technologically informed in carrying out their duties.
“Special Marshals need to understand their operational environment and leverage modern tools to enhance situational awareness,” Ekhator stated. “Let us continue to serve humanity with diligence and uphold the values of safety and integrity.”
Earlier, the State Coordinator of Special Marshals, Mr. Michael Ogbusa, explained that the workshop was designed to strengthen operational discipline, improve field performance, and reinforce safety consciousness among volunteers.
“As the volunteer arm of the FRSC, we play a crucial role in public education, traffic control, and community engagement to reduce road crashes and fatalities,” Ogbusa said. “However, with the current security realities, it is vital that we adopt proactive measures and work more closely with regular marshals to ensure our safety and effectiveness.”
The workshop also featured free medical screenings for participants, including tests for HIV status, blood pressure, blood sugar level, and Body Mass Index (BMI), as part of FRSC’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of its personnel and volunteers.
