LAFIA/Nigeria: In a remarkable ceremony held at the newly renovated Lafia City Stadium on Saturday, Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, was honored with an “Award of Excellence” by the Nigeria National League (NNL) Board.
The prestigious accolade, presented during the 2023/24 curtain-raiser match between Nasarawa United and Zamfara United, was a testament to the Governor’s outstanding contributions to sports development in Nasarawa State and the entire nation, with a special emphasis on his unwavering support for football.
George Aluo, at the helm of the second-tier football league in Nigeria, lauded Governor Sule’s monumental strides and dedication to sports, particularly football. The NNL Board expressed gratitude for the Governor’s swift response in hosting the league’s opening match, showcasing his profound passion for sports and athletes. They commended his commitment as “soul-uplifting” and deemed it worthy of the highest recognition by sports stakeholders.
Representing the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr. Sanusi Muhammad, in conjunction with NNL Board Members, presented the distinguished award and souvenir kits to Governor Sule. The ceremony also saw the NNL Board honoring other key figures instrumental in promoting sports in Nasarawa State and beyond.
Plaques were presented to Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe; Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Jafaru Ango, and Permanent Secretary, Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi, acknowledging their meritorious roles in advancing sports initiatives.
The opening match of the 2023/24 NNL season witnessed Nasarawa United FC emerging victorious with a 1-0 scoreline against Zamfara United FC. The lone goal, scored by right-back Aminu Abubakar in the 9th minute of the first half, added to the celebratory atmosphere, with a massive crowd and distinguished personalities from various walks of life in attendance.
