AWKA/Nigeria: The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has congratulated the newly elected President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo on his victory. Isiguzo was elected the new President of NUJ at the Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the union held in Abeokuta, Ogun State which ended last week.
In a congratulatory message personally signed by Governor Obiano and made available by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, the governor described Comrade Isiguzo’s election as historic, saying that it was one of the few occasions when Nigerians jettison ethnic and religious loyalty, to vote for merit.
“This well-deserved victory, the first ever to be achieved by a member of the union from the Zone C extraction, attests to your high sense of commitment, resoluteness and pursuit of excellence. Your colleagues jettisoned primordial sentiment and voted for merit and the lesson should not be lost on the members of the Nigeria Political Class and the Nigeria voters as we inch towards the 2019 general elections,” Governor Obiano said.
Governor Obiano charged the new President of the NUJ to hit the ground running and expressed hope that he would implement fully the programmes and promises he made while canvassing for votes, to justify the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues.
He acknowledged Comrade Isiguzo’s passion for journalism and urged him to combine that with his wealth of experience for a better society. “I implore you to bequeath to the union a legacy of professionalism which will remain indelible in the sand of time,” the governor said.
Obiano, in felicitating with the entire members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, also congratulated them on conducting a hitch-free election, stressing that the union had by that demonstrated sound democratic tenets worthy of emulation.
Governor Obiano assured the new NUJ President of the continued support of his government to the press and the media and hoped that under his watch the existing cordial relationship between the Anambra State Government and members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm would continue to grow for the mutual benefit of both parties.
“My government has enjoyed very close support and collaboration with the Press and I believe that under your leadership, this will continue to evolve and grow. We make bold to say that our achievements have been made possible because of the good press we have enjoyed,” Obiano said.
Obiano specifically recalled the high visibility that Zone C of the NUJ comprising Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi and Abia States, attained under the leadership of Comrade Isiguzo as Vice President and expressed optimism that he would bequeath a legacy of professionalism to the union, noting that the members of the union would continue to use their vantage position to work for national unity and brotherhood of all the Nigerian people.
