BENIN-CITY/Nigeria: In a compelling address during the Edo Summit, Alaghodaro 2023, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori underscored the pivotal role of the civil service in the successful execution of government policies. Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, the governor articulated the significance of an efficient and effective civil service as a critical ally in the developmental process.
“The successful implementation of the policies of any government depends largely on the efficiency and effectiveness of the civil service,” Governor Oborevwori declared. He emphasized the early engagement and partnership with the civil service, highlighting their role as key personnel in administering the programs outlined in any governmental plan.
Commending Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for sustaining the summit for seven years, Governor Oborevwori praised the platform as instrumental in fostering discourses on capacity building, policy formulation, accountability, and institutional reforms. He acknowledged the contributions of previous editions, expressing belief that they played a role in the progress witnessed in Edo State under Governor Obaseki’s stewardship.
Governor Oborevwori lauded Governor Obaseki’s leadership, noting the exemplary qualities displayed during almost eight years in office. Despite challenges and opposition, he commended Obaseki’s commitment to critical thinking, innovation, service, and social responsibility.
Quoting the aphorism, ‘failing to plan is planning to fail,’ Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of strategic and detailed plans for human, physical, social, and economic development. He expressed hope that the summit would establish a roadmap for critical infrastructure development, human capital enhancement, inclusive economic growth, revenue and spending reforms, job and wealth creation, support for micro, small, and medium enterprises, public-private partnership investments, agricultural value chain development, agro-industries, and more.
In a separate address, Governor Obaseki highlighted Edo State’s progress in industrialization and institutional reform, showcasing the strides made in various areas. The summit, in its final edition under Governor Obaseki’s tenure, is expected to chart a course for the successor and future generations, as the leaders collectively strive for sustainable development and progress.
