ASABA/Nigeria: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has delivered a stern warning to residents, emphasizing the grave dangers associated with scooping petroleum products from fallen tanker trucks.
The Governor, expressing his deep concern over the issue, deemed it a “disaster in waiting” and urged citizens to refrain from such perilous activities that could result in uncontrollable fires and tragic fatalities.
The Governor’s caution came in response to a recent incident involving a petroleum tanker accident in the Ibusa area, where local residents were observed attempting to collect spilled petroleum products from the toppled vehicle. This worrisome development prompted Governor Oborevwori to issue a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, on Wednesday in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori, visibly perturbed by the incident, wasted no time in taking action. He directed Mr. Innocent Eseweze, the Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government Area, to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and fire service personnel to immediately secure the area and ensure the safety of both the tanker and travelers using the road.
In his statement, Governor Oborevwori referenced a recent fire disaster at the Koko-Ugbenu junction along the Benin-Warri Highway, where a fallen tanker led to multiple casualties. He underscored the critical need for residents to heed previous warnings against engaging in dangerous activities like fuel scooping.
The Governor passionately reminded the people of Delta State about the tragic Jesse fire incident of 1998 and numerous other disasters that have resulted from attempting to collect fuel from fallen tankers. In light of these catastrophic events, he implored Deltans to abstain from this perilous practice, reiterating the potential for a “great disaster waiting to happen.”
Governor Oborevwori’s final plea was directed at the collective responsibility of the citizens, urging them to refrain from fuel scooping for the safety and well-being of their loved ones.
