Governor Oborevwori Urges Oil Companies to Support Grassroots Newspapers

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on oil and gas companies in the state to include community newspapers in their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Speaking during the 2024 Lectures and Awards Ceremony of the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN) in Asaba, the governor emphasized the crucial role local newspapers play in connecting government policies to grassroots communities.

Represented by his Senior Political Adviser, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Governor Oborevwori commended the resilience of community newspaper publishers despite the challenges they face. He encouraged the newly inaugurated ACNPN executive committee to fulfill the trust placed in them by their members, urging them to continue amplifying rural voices and reporting on issues affecting their communities.

In his remarks, the immediate past ACNPN Chairman, Comrade Jude Obiemenyego, praised Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering support of the association. He highlighted the indispensable role of community newspapers in bridging communication gaps and fostering development through vital information exchange. Obiemenyego also noted the association’s longstanding tradition of recognizing individuals and organizations that contribute meaningfully to community advancement.

Newly sworn-in ACNPN Chairman, Comrade Ike Abiagom, pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessors. He assured members of his commitment to inclusivity and collaboration in driving the association’s mission.

The event, themed “The Incessant Killings in the Country: Building Synergy Between the Government and Grassroots for Effective Remedy,” also included discussions on cooperative societies’ contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth and their impact on the grassroots.
