ABUJA/Nigeria: The United Young Professionals has commended the Association of Retired Police officers of Nigeria (ARPON); the umbrella body for all retired IGPs, DIGs, AIGS, CPs, DCPs, ACPs; for their unflinching support for the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K-Idris on the war against corruption and welfare of officers and men of Nigeria Police.
In a press release made available to the media on Friday in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the United Young Professionals, Adewole Kehinde said the support from the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON) to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Idris is timely considering his ideas, strategy and quick thinking.
It will be recalled that the IGP Idris also received similar commendation from the former Inspector General of the Nigeria Police, Sunday Gabriel Ehindero during the National Security Summit On Farmers-Pastoralists Clashes, Kidnapping and other forms of Violent Crimes in Nigeria held between May 11 and 12, 2017 at International Conference Centre, Abuja when he said that there is no IGP that has faced challenges as IGP Idris.
Adewole further said that Idris’ sterling performances in Kano and Nasarawa States, where he was a State Commissioner of Police added to his wealth of experiences.
“His previous engagement in the Police Mobile Force and the Operations Department of the Police for several years gave him the added advantage to be a performer either as CP Kano, Nasarrawa and now as IGP.”
Adewole noted that Idris’ ideas and his strategy helped in the check of activities of Fulani herdsmen in Nasarawa State. Nigeria Police Force wouldn’t have achieved this present feat, if not for the operational background and hard work of IGP Idris.
He further said that despite the fact that funding has been a major challenge of the Force, he called on the National Assembly to pass the Nigeria Police Reform Trust Fund bill.
“The Nigeria Police Reform Trust Fund bill is to further provide a legal framework that will outline the counterpart funding arrangement between the Federal Government, the States, Local Governments and Organised Private Sector.
Adewole said that when the bill is passed, Police funding will be through a first line charge on the Federation Account quarterly from the sources indicated above
Part of the IGP achievement is the establishment of seven additional Police Mobile Force Squadrons in the following states: Osun state (Ilesha), Enugu state (Nsukka), Taraba state (Takum), Niger state (Kontagora), Plateau state (Shendam), Kaduna state (Kanfanchan) and Ogun state (Awa Ijebu).
Also, a school to train close protection units’ personnel has been established in order to enhance their capacity. Similarly, 14 special protection bases have been established in the following states of the federation: Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Plateau, Nasarawa, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Ondo and Zamfara.
“One of the reasons the IGP has performed well in the past two year was because he placed competent officers in the right places, Adewole concluded.
