ASABA/Nigeria: The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to delivering quality legislation, effective oversight, and robust representation as the 8th Assembly marks its second anniversary. Speaking during a press briefing at the Assembly Press Centre in Asaba on Friday, Guwor expressed gratitude to God, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his colleagues, and constituents for their support in the legislative journey so far. The Speaker described the past two years as a period of remarkable progress in deepening democracy and promoting good governance in the state.
Addressing journalists, the Speaker highlighted the Assembly’s major milestones, including the passage of critical laws and resolutions aimed at improving the lives of Deltans. He said the House received 16 bills in the second session—eight executive bills and eight private members’ bills, of which seven were passed and six already assented to by the Governor. Guwor listed key legislations such as the Delta State Child Rights (Amendment) Law, the Delta State Human Trafficking (Prohibition) Law, the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law, and the Delta State Urban and Regional Planning Law. He stressed that these laws are geared towards entrenching good governance, ensuring security, and fostering economic and human capital development in line with the M.O.R.E Agenda.
The Speaker further noted that beyond lawmaking, the Assembly had been diligent in its oversight duties, ensuring that government policies and projects were effectively implemented for the benefit of citizens. According to him, members conducted oversight visits, scrutinized budget performance, and engaged in public hearings to promote accountability and transparency. He commended his colleagues for their unity and dedication, which he said had made the 8th Assembly one of the most vibrant in the country. Guwor also lauded the Governor for his support and the cordial relationship that exists between the Executive and Legislative arms in the state.
Guwor announced that the anniversary activities include a novelty football match between the Assembly and the State Executive Council on June 21 and a thanksgiving service on June 22. He emphasized that the Assembly had maintained a strong focus on capacity building through regular training of members, aides, and staff to enhance legislative processes. The Speaker also revealed that the Governor approved the payment of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS) for Assembly staff, a move he said would boost morale and service delivery.
On security concerns in parts of the state, the Speaker extended the Assembly’s sympathies to families affected by recent breaches and assured that legislative measures are being strengthened to support law enforcement. He disclosed that a bill to amend the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Law is under consideration, with the aim of enhancing local intelligence gathering and security. Guwor also appealed for peace and dialogue over the contentious issue of ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency, urging all groups to allow the federal authorities handling the matter to conclude their work without rancour.
In closing, Guwor pledged that the 8th Assembly will remain steadfast in advancing the development, peace, and progress of Delta State as it enters the third session. He thanked the media for its partnership in amplifying the work of the legislature and reaffirmed the Assembly’s resolve to serve the people with integrity and dedication. “We are one big family working under the Renewed Hope and M.O.R.E Agenda of Mr. President and our dear Governor,” he stated, assuring constituents that the House will continue to pursue initiatives that will bring prosperity to all Deltans.
